Understanding credit before you shop

Know what reports, scores, and financing inquiries mean.

Credit is a record, not a judgment about you. Knowing which document you see helps you ask useful questions and compare financing. A report describes reported history; a score summarizes risk using one model. Neither alone says whether a vehicle fits your budget.

Separate report from score

A report can contain identity information, accounts, payment status, balances, inquiries, collections, and bankruptcy. Creditors may not send data to every bureau, so reports may differ. Check all three for accuracy before a major application.

A score is calculated from report data. Multiple models and versions exist, and a lender may use a different score than a bank or app displays. AnnualCreditReport.com supplies free reports, not a promised free score. Treat any score as a snapshot, not approval.

  • Payment history and revolving balances matter in many models.
  • Income is considered for affordability but is not itself a credit score.
  • Your own report review has no score impact.

Use knowledge while shopping

Estimate a payment that leaves room for insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and emergencies. Ask for amount financed, annual percentage rate, term, schedule, and total of payments. A lower monthly amount created by a longer term may cost more overall.

A financing application may lead to an inquiry. Do not assume every dealer or lender check is soft; ask what you authorize and read it. McLeod can explore available routes, but approval and terms depend on the transaction and lender. Review the actual contract.

  • Compare total cost, not only payment.
  • Correct report errors before applying when timing permits.
  • Keep applications and disclosures.
