Fixing your credit: a self-help roadmap

Start with accurate reports, lawful corrections, and habits you can sustain.

Credit repair is not a secret shortcut. Learn what your files say, correct genuine errors, and build a manageable payment record. You can perform these core tasks yourself for little or no cost. This hub connects each step without asking you to pay for impossible promises.

Make an accurate baseline

Request all three reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. Reports are not scores, and that authorized service does not promise a free score. Compare each file with statements because Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion may receive different information. Reviewing your own files does not lower a score.

Mark unfamiliar accounts, wrong late payments, duplicate debts, incorrect balances, and identity details that may belong to someone else. Dispute inaccurate or incomplete entries with both the bureau and the business that furnished them. Send copies, not irreplaceable originals, and keep dated records.

  • Accurate, current negative information cannot lawfully be removed just because it hurts.
  • Most negative information may remain about seven years; bankruptcy may remain up to ten years, with exceptions.
  • Investigations generally take 30 days, but some circumstances allow 45.

Choose progress you can sustain

Use reminders or autopay carefully so required payments arrive by their due dates. Work toward lower revolving balances without sacrificing housing, food, insurance, or transportation. Carrying a balance and paying interest is not required to build credit. Apply only when credit serves a real need.

Nobody can predict an exact point increase or date. Avoid anyone demanding advance payment, directing you to challenge facts you know are accurate, selling a new identity, or claiming government affiliation. Use the related guides for reports, disputes, scams, counseling, and identity theft.

  • Contact creditors before a missed payment when possible.
  • Measure progress with accurate updated data, not a guaranteed number.
  • Keep every agreement and response.

Frequently asked questions

Can accurate late payments be deleted?

Usually not while accurate and reportable. Dispute factual errors, not valid history.

How quickly will a score improve?

There is no universal timeline or point promise. Models, data, and activity differ.

Do I need a repair company?

No company has a lawful shortcut unavailable to you; reports and genuine disputes are available directly.
