Dispute credit report errors yourself

Document a real error and contact both responsible organizations.

A dispute is fact-checking, not a way to erase accurate history. Challenging inaccurate or incomplete information is free. A focused submission with account details and evidence is easier to investigate than claiming everything is wrong.

Build a clear record

Get the report showing the problem and note its file number. Identify the exact entry, explain the error, and request a correction. Support may include statements, payment confirmations, closing letters, identification, or a marked report copy. Redact unrelated sensitive data.

Send one dispute to the bureau and another to the business that furnished the data, using each official current process. Keep copies, dates, confirmation screens, and delivery records. Never send an irreplaceable original.

  • Name the account and field precisely.
  • Explain facts in your words.
  • Request correction or removal of inaccurate or incomplete data.

Track investigation and result

Bureau investigations generally take 30 days. Some circumstances permit 45 days, including when relevant information is added during the investigation. Review the written result and revised report. Check other bureaus because one correction may not fix every file.

If unresolved, confirm evidence reached bureau and furnisher and consider relevant new documents or qualified legal guidance. Do not repeatedly send substantially identical disputes without new information. Never dispute information you know is accurate.

  • Calendar follow-up.
  • Confirm changes later.
  • Use identity-theft procedures for identity misuse.
